How to set up Instagram Shopping UK for your business

Setting up Instagram Shopping in the UK means a Meta Business Suite portfolio, a product catalogue and the same distance selling rules as your website.

What to take away

  • Instagram Shopping in the UK is a product catalogue held inside Meta Business Suite, not a separate shop account.
  • Product tagging suits most small retailers, because on-platform checkout is not offered to every account or market.
  • Each tag carries a price, a stock state and a delivery promise that must match what you publish elsewhere.
  • Catalogue and order data are personal data, so retention and access rules apply from the first sale.

Check eligibility before you build anything

Instagram Shopping is a catalogue attached to a Meta Business Suite portfolio. That portfolio holds the Facebook Page, the Instagram professional account and the product feed in one place.

Instagram Shopping eligibility checklist

  • Meta Business Suite portfolio created
  • Facebook Page connected
  • Instagram professional account connected
  • Product feed priced in pounds sterling
  • Registered business details ready
  • Named product policy contact
  • Extra checks for supplements and health claims

Eligibility runs on two tracks. Meta decides whether you may tag products and whether checkout is switched on for your account. UK selling rules decide what you must disclose, publish and honour.

Gather three things first: your registered business details, a feed priced in pounds sterling, and a named person who answers product policy questions. Some categories, including supplements and health claims, face extra checks. Read Meta's Commerce Policies and Commerce Eligibility Requirements, as well as the UK regulations guidance, before you photograph stock.

If you are still weighing storefronts, comparing Facebook Shops with TikTok Shop sets out how each platform tests a seller, which saves building a catalogue twice.

The setup steps in Meta Business Suite

The order below follows where each decision lands, first in Meta Business Suite and then in Commerce Manager.

Follow this sequence; menu labels can vary slightly as Meta updates its tools.

  • In Meta Business Suite, open your business portfolio's Settings. Add or select the Facebook Page under Business assets, then add the Instagram professional account under Accounts > Instagram accounts. Sign in and assign the account to the Page.
  • If products will link to your own website, open Domains in the portfolio's Business Settings, add your domain and complete one of the verification methods Meta offers, such as a DNS TXT record, an HTML file or a meta tag. Then select Verify.
  • In Commerce Manager, open Catalogues and choose Create catalogue. Select Ecommerce, choose the business portfolio and create the catalogue. Add products manually, connect a supported commerce platform or use a product feed.
  • To upload a feed, open the catalogue's Data sources and choose Add items > Data feed. Upload a CSV, TSV or XML file. Include the fields id, title, description, availability, condition, price, link and image_link for each product; include brand and a GTIN or MPN where applicable. Use GBP prices, accurate stock information and working product and image links. Check the feed's diagnostics after upload and correct any errors.
  • In Commerce Manager's shop setup, check which checkout method is offered for your account. Choose checkout on your website where available; use on-platform checkout only if Meta offers it to your account.
  • In Commerce Manager, fix any catalogue or shop issues shown in Diagnostics, then use the shop setup's submit or publish action to send it for review. If Instagram asks for an account review, complete that through its shopping setup.
  • After approval, open Instagram's professional account settings and choose Shopping, then select the catalogue. To tag an item, create a post or Reel, choose Tag products and select the product before sharing.

Meta Business Suite setup order

  1. Create or claim business portfolio
  2. Complete business verification
  3. Connect Facebook Page and Instagram
  4. Build catalogue in Commerce Manager
  5. Complete every product field
  6. Submit shop for review
  7. Switch on and test product tagging
  8. Choose checkout route

Reviews tend to return comments rather than refusals, so treat the first submission as a working draft and fix the flagged products together. Check Commerce Manager's Diagnostics for catalogue errors, correct rejected items, and use the shop setup's submit or publish action to send the shop for review.

What each checkout route asks of you

Three routes exist, and they differ in who takes the money and who holds the customer record.

What each checkout route asks

Payment taken by

Product tags only
Your own website
On-platform checkout, where offered
Meta
Creator or affiliate tags
Your own website

Refunds handled by

Product tags only
Your team
On-platform checkout, where offered
Your team, using Meta tools

What you can export

Product tags only
Every order, in full
On-platform checkout, where offered

Read the table by column rather than by row. The route decides which refund process your staff run, which data you can export and which tax evidence you keep.

Write the price, delivery promise and returns window before the catalogue goes live, not after the first complaint.

UK rules that sit behind every tag

Distance selling is regulated. The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 require pre-contract information, a 14-day cancellation right and a model cancellation form for most online sales.

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 adds the quality standards. Goods must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality, with a 30-day short-term right to reject.

Returns are the part buyers test first. Publish returns policy requirements for UK sellers on the product page or in the tag itself, not in a footer.

Catalogue and order data count as personal data. The ICO's UK GDPR guidance covers lawful basis, retention periods and subject access requests, and it applies to a one-person shop as much as a large one.

Prices shown to UK consumers must include VAT where the seller is registered, so the figure on the tag is the figure the buyer expects to pay.

Common questions

Do I need a limited company to set up Instagram Shopping in the UK?

No. Sole traders can open a Meta Business Suite portfolio, although business verification asks for paperwork that proves the legal name you trade under.

Is Instagram checkout available to UK sellers?

Availability changes by account and market. In Commerce Manager, check the checkout method offered in your shop setup rather than assuming on-platform checkout is available. Where it is not offered, choose checkout on your own website so product tags send shoppers to your basket.

What if a tagged product goes out of stock?

Update availability in the catalogue straight away. A tag on an unavailable item creates a broken journey, and the buyer has no page to explain it.

Does Instagram Shopping change my returns policy?

No. The same distance selling rules apply, including cancellation rights and refund timing, whichever route takes the payment.
