Part of Planning social commerce for 2027 around where the purchase completes
A social commerce planning template from decision boundary to decision record
Complete a practical social commerce planning template for England with product scope, transaction ownership, evidence, costs and review decisions.
Complete this template for one product group and one checkout route. This is a fill-in template with no downloadable file. Copy the fields into your own document before you start. Duplicate it for a materially different channel instead of blending several journeys into one plan. The output should let finance, customer service and content teams describe the same transaction.
What to take away
- Complete the template for one product group and one checkout route, then duplicate it for a materially different channel.
- Walk failure cases through actual systems before approving exposure, or the template is incomplete.
- Record the denominator for each ratio, since checkout conversion can begin at different points.
Decision and boundary
Decision to make: [Expand, revise, hold or stop a defined route]
Decision and boundary fields
- Decisionexpand, revise, hold or stop
- Customer problemobserved question or failure
- Product scopeincluded SKUs and exclusions
- England ruledelivery address in England
- Test periodstart, live end, settlement review
- Order types kept separateplatform, referred, other
Customer problem: [Observed question or failure near purchase]
Product scope: [Included SKUs and exclusions]
England rule: [For example, delivery address in England]
Test period: [Start, live end and settlement review]
Order types kept separate: [Platform checkout, referred website order, other]
Do not use an online retail total as a forecast. The ONS Retail Sales Index internet-sales data covers Great Britain, all online discovery routes and specified retail categories. State that boundary wherever it supplies context.
Add one sentence explaining why the chosen product can answer the decision. A discounted bestseller may produce enough orders but conceal the normal economics; an unfamiliar item may test explanation but create very few checkouts. Record price changes, stock constraints and existing demand so the review does not credit the channel for conditions it did not cause.
Journey and ownership
Discovery event: [Exact post, live session, creator content or product tag]
Journey and ownership hand-offs
- Discovery event: post, live, creator, tag
- Checkout owner: named merchant or platform
- Source of order truth: system and identifier
- Stock owner: role and pause trigger
- Customer-service hand-off: channel, hours, escalation
- Cancellation and return route: location and owner
Checkout owner: [Named merchant or platform]
Source of order truth: [System and order identifier]
Stock owner: [Role and pause trigger]
Customer-service hand-off: [Channel, hours and escalation]
Cancellation and return route: [Displayed location and operational owner]
Verify current platform eligibility in the relevant account. A public route is not approval. For example, TikTok Shop's UK seller guide describes registration categories and verification steps. Save the dated result of the business's own check.
Failure rehearsal: [Out-of-stock item, cancellation and returned affiliate order]
Pause authority: [Named role and out-of-hours contact]
Reconciliation exception: [Where mismatched orders wait and who resolves them]
Walk those cases through the actual systems before approving exposure. The template is incomplete if a customer can pay while staff cannot identify which seller, stock record or refund process applies.
Content and claim control
Product question answered: [One customer doubt]
Approved demonstration: [What will be shown and limits]
Claim file: [Wording, proof, qualification, owner and review date]
Creator relationship: [Deliverable, payment, rights and approval boundary]
Commercial disclosure check: [Person and timing]
The ASA and CAP influencer guide addresses paid, gifted, controlled and affiliate content. Use current specialist review for each planned execution. Do not rely on a generic contract clause to make the published post clear.
Content change log: [Who can edit claims, links, labels and product tags]
Stock-sensitive material: [Posts or videos that must pause with availability]
Record the final public version, not only the approved script. Captions, overlays, product cards and platform disclosures can create a different customer message after upload.
Customer and data safeguards
Seller, price, delivery and returns review: [Owner, date and evidence]
Personal fields received: [Field, source and purpose]
Access and retention: [People, location and deletion event]
Promotional follow-up: [Channel, audience and lawful review]
The ICO direct-marketing guidance covers planning and respecting people's preferences. Assess the actual communication rather than describing every post-order message as service administration.
Economics and measures
Commercial result: [Definition and formula]
Journey diagnostic: [Starting event, outcome and exclusions]
Guardrail: [Returns, complaints, stock errors or support backlog]
Cost lines: [Production, creator, sample, transaction, fulfilment, support, review]
Reconciliation date: [After the chosen return or settlement period]
Illustrative cost line: production £4.20 per unit, creator fee £300 and fulfilment £3.10 per order. If the route produces 300 paid orders, creator cost is £1.00 per order. Illustration only; replace with your own figures.
Also record the denominator for each ratio. "Checkout conversion" might begin with a tagged-item view, product-page session or checkout start; those figures cannot be compared as if they were the same measure. Note excluded staff activity, duplicates and incomplete records.
Worked example: reusable bottle and platform checkout
These fields show a finished template for one product group and one checkout route. The figures are illustrative placeholders, not benchmarks.

Decision record
At each review, enter the evidence available, contradictory findings, unresolved operational issues and the decision owner. Predefine stop triggers. Finish by recording exactly what may scale: product, route, content format, staffing and safeguards. An attractive result from one discounted item should not authorise a wider rollout without another explicit decision.
Before you act
- Complete one template per product group and checkout route.
- Verify current platform eligibility in the relevant account.
- Save the dated result of the business's own eligibility check.
- Walk out-of-stock, cancellation and returned affiliate cases through systems.
- Record the final public version of each post or video.
- Note excluded staff activity, duplicates and incomplete records.
Common questions
Why should an online retail total not be used as a forecast?
A single route plan has one checkout owner, one stock record and one return route. The ONS index is a sector aggregate, so it cannot supply a denominator for those. Use it only as wider context after the route boundary is named.
What must be checked before approving exposure?
A named person should confirm the seller, stock record and refund route in the live system. Test a cancellation and a returned affiliate order, then save the dated check. Repeat the eligibility check before each campaign burst because platform rules change.
Why record the final public version rather than the approved script?
The approved script is an internal document. The public record is the evidence of what a customer saw at a point in time. Store the dated live URL and a screenshot with the order reconciliation file.
